How to Improve Egg Quality and Fertility: 11 Foods to Eat
As a fertility acupuncturist, I work with women who are searching for something concrete in the middle of a process that can feel completely out of their control. How to improve egg quality is one of the most common questions I hear and it's one I'm glad to answer, because the research is genuinely encouraging.
While age remains a significant factor in reproductive health, egg quality itself is not fixed. It's adaptive. Research in reproductive medicine increasingly supports what Traditional Chinese Medicine has maintained for centuries: the environment in which eggs develop is modifiable. Nutrient status, oxidative stress, inflammation, circulation, and mitochondrial energy all influence how eggs mature during the critical 90-day window before ovulation and each of these can be meaningfully supported through diet, lifestyle, acupuncture and herbal medicine.
The eleven foods below represent the nutritional foundation I recommend to patients at my West Hollywood clinic who are working to support their fertility, whether they're trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IVF, or planning to freeze their eggs.
Women come into my clinic looking for real answers not just another supplement to add to a growing pile, but food and holistic practices that actually nourish their eggs and their hormonal cycle from the inside out. That foundation always starts with nutrition.
What Is Egg Quality And Why It's Part of a Bigger Picture
Egg quality is one of the most important factors in fertility, but it's not the whole story. Fertility is a whole body process that depends on hormone balance, circulation, uterine health, immune regulation, and nervous system tone and egg quality lives within that larger system, not separate from it.
From a Western perspective, egg quality refers to the health of your eggs at a cellular level: their chromosomal integrity, mitochondrial energy, and ability to fertilize and develop into a healthy embryo. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, it reflects the depth of your Kidney Jing and Blood the foundational substances that nourish not just your eggs, but your entire reproductive capacity.
What matters most is that egg quality is not fixed. The environment your eggs develop in during the 90 days before ovulation is directly influenced by your nutrient status, oxidative stress load, inflammation, circulation, and mitochondrial energy all of which respond to how you eat, rest, and care for yourself.
That's why food is such a meaningful place to start. The nine foods below support egg quality as part of the broader fertility environment: nourishing the blood, reducing inflammation, supporting hormone balance, and creating the internal conditions your body needs to thrive reproductively.
Why This Matters for Your Diet
Some foods in this guide directly nourish egg cells. Others support the broader fertility environment they develop in.
Antioxidant-rich foods protect egg cells from oxidative damage, inflammation and immune dysreglation
CoQ10-rich foods support the mitochondrial energy eggs need to mature
Iron, folate, and mineral-rich foods nourish the blood and uterine lining
This is also why acupuncture and cupping pair so well with nutrition for fertility, they work on boosting circulation, hormonal regulation, and nervous system support that food alone can't fully address. I like to tell my patients, you can take all the best supplements, herbal formulas and eat the best foods but ultimately good circulation is going to get the nutrients where they need to go.

Balancing Blood Sugar for Hormone Health & Fertility
One of the most important aspects of fertility nutrition is maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Balanced blood sugar plays a key role in regulating hormones like cortisol, progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone, all of which directly impact ovulation and egg quality. When insulin resistance is present, it can contribute to overall metabolic syndrome, inflammation and hormone disruptions such as excess testosterone and lack of ovulation, leading to pathologies such as PCOS (PMOS). I tell my patients to aim for a hemoglobin a1c around 5.
When blood sugar is stable, your body is better able to maintain hormonal balance, support consistent energy, and create a more optimal environment for fertility.
Here are a few foundational ways I tell my patients support balanced blood sugar:
Start your day with protein and fiber: Aim for around 30 grams of protein with 8-10 grams within an hour of waking. This helps stabilize blood sugar early in the day and supports sustained energy and hormone regulation. There are many protein options listed below!
Eat regularly: Try to eat every 3–4 hours to avoid spikes and crashes. Consistency in nourishment helps keep your hormones more stable throughout the day.
Eat Balanced Meals and Snacks: Make each meal and snack is balanced with protein, fiber, fat and carbs. Eating carbs alone creates glucose spikes
Go for walks after meals: One of the best ways to regulate blood sugar is to take a 10-20 minute walk after each meal, this allows your body pull glucose out of the bloodstream and into the muscles for immediate use which reduces your reliance on insulin
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, fertility is cultivated through steady, intentional nourishment not extremes. Eating warming, whole foods consistently helps strengthen digestion, build Blood, and support the body’s natural reproductive rhythms.

10. Beets
Beets are one of the most underrated foods for fertility, and they deserve their own spotlight. They're rich in nitrates, which the body converts to nitric oxide, a compound that directly supports blood vessel dilation and circulation. In the context of fertility, that means better blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, which matters enormously for follicle development and uterine lining quality. Beets are also a meaningful source of folate and betaine, which support methylation, a critical process for healthy cell division and DNA integrity in developing eggs.
In TCM, beets are a Blood-building food. Their deep red color is not incidental; they nourish and move Blood simultaneously, making them particularly valuable for women with Blood deficiency patterns or poor pelvic circulation.
Benefits for fertility:
Nitric oxide precursors support blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
Folate supports healthy egg development and early cell division
Betaine supports methylation and DNA integrity
Blood-building and mildly Blood-moving in TCM
11. Fiber-Rich Foods (Lentils, Beans, Cruciferous Vegetables)
Fiber doesn't always get the attention it deserves in fertility conversations, but it plays a quiet and essential role. Adequate fiber intake supports the body's ability to clear excess estrogen and testosterone through the digestive tract when that process is sluggish, estrogen and testosterone recirculates and can contribute to hormonal imbalances that affect ovulation, cycle regularity, and implantation and lead to pathologies such as fibroids and endometriosis and PCOS (PMOS)
Lentils and beans are also excellent plant-based sources of iron, folate, and protein all directly relevant to egg quality and reproductive health. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain a compound called DIM (diindolylmethane) that specifically supports healthy estrogen metabolism through the liver.
In TCM, fiber-rich legumes and vegetables support Spleen Qi and healthy digestion, and since the Spleen is responsible for transforming food into Blood and Essence, strong digestive function is foundational to reproductive health.
Benefits for fertility:
Fiber supports estrogen clearance and hormone metabolism
Lentils and beans provide plant-based iron, folate, and protein
Cruciferous vegetables support liver-based estrogen detoxification via DIM
Support Spleen Qi and the digestive foundation of Blood production
Whole Foods vs. Supplements for Fertility
If you’re looking into how to improve egg quality and overall fertility, it’s important to understand that whole foods should be your foundation, with supplements used to support, not replace, your diet.
Whole foods provide nutrients in their most bioavailable, synergistic form, helping support digestion, hormone production, and blood sugar balance. From a TCM perspective, strong digestion (Spleen Qi) is essential for building the Blood and Essence that nourish your eggs.
Supplements can be helpful when used intentionally, especially if you have nutrient deficiencies, are preparing for IVF or egg freezing, or need higher therapeutic support. Common options include CoQ10 for mitochondrial energy, omega-3s for inflammation, and prenatal vitamins for foundational support.
For best results, your approach should be personalized to your body and your fertility journey.

Chinese Herbal Formulas and Fertility
Alongside nutrition, Chinese herbal medicine offers one of the most powerful and personalized tools available for supporting egg quality and overall fertility in both men and women.
Herbs like Dang Gui (Angelica or Lady Ginseng), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Tu Si Zi (Chinese Dodder Seeds) have been used in TCM for centuries to nourish, regulate reproductive hormones, promote circulation, increase ATP or mitochondrial energy within eggs, reduce stress and improve sleep and support the overall fertility environment. What makes herbal medicine particularly effective is that it is never prescribed in isolation. Herbal protocols are carefully tailored to your unique constitution, symptoms, and cycle, targeting the specific root cause of your fertility challenges rather than a generic diagnosis.
No two fertility journeys are the same, and no two herbal prescriptions should be either. If you're wondering whether Chinese herbal medicine is right for you, book a free 15 minute consultation to learn more.
Nutrition, Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture: A Powerful Combination for Fertility
If you’re focused on conceiving, combining targeted nutrition with acupuncture and herbal medicine can be one of the most supportive holistic approaches not just physically, but emotionally as well.
Why Nutrition Alone Isn’t Always Enough
Food provides the building blocks for healthy eggs and fertility, herbal medicine and acupuncture can make up for what nutrition cannot change. Fertility is not just physical, it’s also deeply connected to your nervous system, stress levels, and overall sense of safety in your body.
When you’re trying to conceive, especially if it’s taking longer than expected, stress can build in subtle ways:
Overthinking every symptom
Feeling like your body is “not working”
Carrying quiet disappointment each cycle
This is where acupuncture and herbal medicine become incredibly valuable.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine Support Egg Quality and Fertility
In TCM, fertility challenges are often linked to imbalances in Kidney Yin, Yang, Jing, Blood, Spleen qi, Liver Qi and Wei Qi (see my blog about that here) Acupuncture and herbal medicine help restore balance so your body can function optimally. Acupuncture works at a systemic level to:
Increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus and systemically
Regulate reproductive hormones (FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone)
Reduce cortisol and chronic stress
Support nervous system regulation
Support Sleep
Why This Combination Works
When you combine acupuncture and nutrition and herbal medicine, nutrition works to build and nourish the eggs while acupuncture and herbal medicine supports circulation, hormonal regulation, and stress response. Together, this not only enhances egg quality but also your entire fertility environment. This approach is especially helpful if you feel like you’ve tried everything, are preparing for IVF or egg retrieval, are navigating hormonal imbalances, or are looking for a more holistic and supportive path forward.
